The Birtley team decided they needed to check just what people’s understanding about bowel cancer was in order to help identify what kind of awareness raising activities would be most suitable. One hundred ‘true or false’ questionnaires were given out and completed. It generated good discussions which enabled information about bowel cancer to be shared.

The results showed that older people (aged 60 or more) had a good awareness about bowel cancer whereas people under 40 had a poor understanding. This has enabled the team to be clearer in where to prioritise their activities.
